Exploring the Hudson Valley: Snips

Snips

Snips is a tiny barbershop on Collegeview Avenue, no more than a five-minute walk from Vassar’s campus. The small, utilitarian store is inexpensive and delivers a quick, good quality haircut. No frills—which I like in a barbershop.

My only complaint was their limited store hours. Though Snips advertises hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., they are closed on weekends and Mondays and seem to take inexplicable breaks throughout the afternoon. As an editor for The Miscellany News and a full-time student, I don’t have much free time. So I was understandably annoyed when I walked to Snips twice in one week only to find the store empty with a post-it note on the door reading, “Back in an hour!” Each time I fell for the trick, returning in about an hour and 15 minutes only to find the same note. I didn’t appreciate having my limited time wasted, twice, and almost decided to go to the more ostentatiously decorated Arlington Hair Trendz next door.

But the third time turned out to be the charm. After a brief Friday afternoon stroll through Arlington, I waltzed right into the barber’s chair. The hair stylist cut my curly, difficult-to-manage hair quickly and with precision. Apparently, I was not the only person to discover their Friday afternoon hours; by the time I left the store, three women and two men had crowded into the small salon for a trim.

The haircut was pretty reasonably priced at $12 (the same simple haircut in my hometown of Manhattan would have been closer to $20). I took my change and wandered briskly back to campus in the peaceful autumnal breeze. Not so briskly, though, that I missed out on my favorite local latté at the Krafted Cup, which is just a few awnings away from Snips. Shameless plug for the Krafted Cup: Their coffee puts the Retreat’s to shame.

Overall, I had a great experience at Snips. I’ll certainly be back the next time I need a haircut—though I will probably call ahead for an appointment.
