Vassar College will renew Aramark Corporation’s dining services contract, College officials confirmed on Tuesday, April 15. The decision was made by the Request for Proposal Committee (RFPC), which has been researching and reviewing food vendors since Spring 2007.

Vassar College President Catharine Bond Hill announced this week that Vassar, along with 18 other liberal arts colleges, will no longer mention the U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) rankings in any future promotional publications. They will also make public all statistics that were formerly distributed to individual ranking companies.

Prospects of future work get mixed reviews

Vassar’s plan to revitalize Raymond Avenue was met with mixed reception in the Poughkeepsie community last year. Many Poughkeepsie residents worried that the new roundabouts would slow traffic on the major road, and that their tax dollars were going to be spent on a project that would benefit the College alone, despite the College’s insistence that the construction is an attempt to help integrate the campus with the local community.

The idea of the co-ed college bathroom is sometimes worrisome to incoming Vassar freshmen, evoking images of overtaxed showers and toilets, as well as humiliating encounters with the opposite sex in varying degrees of undress. However, the comparatively pristine bathroom on the west wing of Josselyn House’s fourth floor is at odds with the conditions typical of many bathrooms on campus, something the freshmen girls who use it attribute to the lack of male residents on their floor.

Which national touring acts can the Vassar student body expect to see? Though it is ViCE’s responsibility to try to satisfy as much of the student body as possible—their mission statement identifies them as “the programming board for the campus”—it does not forbid them from occasionally booking smaller and less accessible acts.

But according to ViCE CEO Jeremy Robinson-Leon ’07, ViCE rarely does so because these acts are expensive ventures. More importantly, it is difficult to get students interested in these smaller acts.

Concerns about Baldwin spark task force

The disinclination of Vassar students to visit the Baldwin Medical Center has become a concern among students and administrators, and has prompted the VSA to approve a new task force that will examine the potential sources of this reluctance.

The student task force, which will be headed by Noyes President Chelsea Backer ’07 and Ezra Markowitz ’07, will be comprised of representatives from a number of organizations, including CHOICE and the Office of Health Education. The task force will address concerns regarding Baldwin’s administration, its staff and the EMS system, as well as widespread feelings about health services in general.

The Vassar Student Association (VSA) passed a motion to de-authorize after a motion to de-recognize failed. Duke versus UNC, Harvard versus Yale, University of Michigan versus Ohio State, Vassar versus...? Who exactly is Vassar’s major rival? Many outstanding rivalries for other schools come to mind, but when it comes to us, the Brewers, it’s a mystery. When prompted, many student-athletes struggled to name their respective team’s rivals when asked. Some took a few minutes to think about it, others simply replied ‘I don’t know.’ But the rivals are out there. They’re on the field and they’re in our locker rooms.

Town students, police, security hold meeting

Town students, Poughkeepsie police, College security, and area residents met on Wednesday, Sept. 21 to discuss conduct and noise complaints. This was the second meeting of this kind in two years. Organized by Poughkeepsie Crime Prevention Officer Eric Hawlk, the meeting consisted of seven panel members, ten community members, and two students. LaGrange housemates Pat Shields ’07 and Paul Mersfelder ’07 were the only students who came to the meeting. All students who live on LaGrange and Davis Avenues were invited. One of the panel members was state assemblyman Joel Miller. Director of Residential Life Luis Inoa and Dean of Students D.B. Brown attended the meeting as well.

VSA passes resolution about The Imperialist

Controversy over the article titled “Race and Freedom” in the Moderate, Independent and Conservative Alliance’s most recent issue of The Imperialist continued this weekend at a Vassar Students Association Council meeting that lasted more than two hours. Approximately 105 people, in addition to the entire Council came to discuss concerns over the language and images used in The Imperialist. Vassar gets supersized: Vassar Greens and Dems welcome Morgan Spurlock

Award-winning writer and director of Super Size Me Morgan Spurlock will be speaking at the Vassar Chapel Saturday April 9. He will be giving the Keynote Address at 1:30 p.m. for the Vassar Greens’ annual Earth Week that runs from Saturday April 9 to Saturday April 16.

Most famous for his debut as director, producer and star in Super Size Me, Spurlock has, since the film’s premiere in January 2004, concerned himself with the films ultimate goal—the current “obesity epidemic,” especially among children in the United States.

Round Table on Drug and Alcohol Policy

Is there any truth to the rumor that Vassar will become a dry campus? In this new feature, The Miscellany News asks the questions everyone wants answered via a discussion between select students, faculty, staff, and administrators.

This week’s topic is Vassar’s drug and alcohol policy. Participants include Associate Dean Raymon Parker, Director of Security Don Marsala, several student leaders, and a student EMT.

Matthew's Mug temporarily shuts down

Matthew’s Mug was closed last Thursday, Jan. 27 through Saturday, Jan. 29 due to incidents of underage drinking and vandalism earlier in the week. The Mug staff met Friday to discuss ways to ensure that the Mug is run in accordance with New York’s state laws.

An unknown person plugged the drain in the men’s bathroom and turned on the sink at the Mug Saturday, Jan. 22. Once the resulting flood was stopped by unclogging the drain, the offender again clogged the drain and turned on the water, this time removing the faucet handles.

Students travel to D.C. for Inauguration protest

Thirty-four Vassar students travelled to Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Jan. 20 to join the thousands of protestors marching through the capital’s streets for the presidential inauguration.

Students had the opportunity to demonstrate on Pennsylvania Avenue and 4th. For the first time in presidential history, protestors received a permit to gather at a point on the inaugural parade route.

Presidential Race at Vassar 2004

On Nov. 2, the entire campus held its breath as the 2004 presidential election unfolded. Students particpated on all levels, from voting, to helping others vote, to traveling to other states in order to canvas for candidates. By the end of the day, however, all there was left to do was to sit and wait for the results.

Don’t feel sorry for Raul Gasteazoro ’04. Sure, he lives in an aging El Dorado mobile home, and yes, some of his burlap costumes are moldy because of a leak, and no doubt it’s supremely frustrating to be making a film on such a low budget. But this man’s got it all figured out.
