Controller Gail Goodness will leave Vassar after three years to become Controller at Dartmouth College, announced Vice President for Finance and Administration Elizabeth Eismeier in an e-mail to faculty and staff last week.

Goodness’s last day will be May 23, and she will begin at Dartmouth on June 1.

Vassar’s controller heads the Office of Accounting Services, which is responsible for all of the College’s financial operations, including payroll, budget control, tax reporting, preparation of internal and external financial reports and support for student organization accounts.

The Office of Student and Employee Accounts, along with the Department of Purchasing, Copy Center and Post Office all report to the controller. The office also oversees tax payments and state and Federal funds.

Eismeier noted that Goodness has made dramatic improvements to Vassar’s accounting systems in her three years here.

“She has improved our internal procedures for accounting and control, increased the documentation of systems for accounting, and responded to a wide variety of external initiatives—changes in accounting procedures and governmental requirements,” she said.

Eismeier said that Goodness will be missed. “We are all very sorry that she is leaving. Of course, we understand that the job at Dartmouth is a step up in her career, allowing her to take on new challenges as the controller of a larger organization.” Vassar has about 2,450 students and 240 faculty members; Dartmouth has approximately 6,000 students and a faculty of 650, including graduate programs.

“The offer was just so good, I couldn’t turn it down,” said Goodness. “I’m going to miss the people here so much. They’ve been so great to work these past years. But with a bigger college comes bigger responsibilities. I had to think about my career.”

Vassar has already started the search process for her replacement. “We would hope to have the new controller on board before the fall term begins,” said Eismeier.
