Guest WriterFlyPeople are the only official, “unofficial” dance group on campus that gives students the opportunity to make their own creative decisions. The dancers choose their own music, choreograph their own pieces and organize a performance each semester to show off their hard work.
Most Vassar students would agree that we could all learn something from our friends in FlyPeople, and this Saturday, March 29, the dancers are giving everyone the opportunity. Beginning at 3 p.m. on the second floor of the Students’ Building, FlyPeople will be hosting CampFly, a day of dance workshops open to the entire Vassar community.
FlyPeople has had a busy semester. On Valentine’s Day, the group held its first event of the semester, Pour Some Sugar On Me, in collaboration with several a cappella groups, and their final show will take place on April 24 and 25. CampFly will be the group’s second largest fundraiser of the year and will help enhance the group’s final performance.
The event is divided into half-hour classes that cost $3, full-hour classes that cost $5 and full-day passes that cost $10. The dancers themselves will instruct the camp-goers and the classes will each include a warm-up and stretch and will vary in style from hip-hop to tap.
FlyPeople encourage both dancers and non-dancers to attend.
“The dances taught will be totally learnable for the average beginner,” said FlyPeople member Ariella Danzinger ’10. “The moves might be a little confusing—after all, not everyone has mastered a body roll. But the harder moves will be broken down, and everyone should come away feeling great!”
“Campers should expect a day of really positive energy, and leave knowing they’ve tried and succeeded at something new,” Danzinger continued. But that’s not all. Danzinger warned that CampFly will “unavoidably result in some hip-shaking.”
FlyPeople believe that this event will open up dance to students who seldom get a chance to enjoy it.
“We’re just trying to open dance up to a wider community than Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre and FlyPeople,” said Danzinger.
“We’re hoping to convert a few non-dancers to dance-lovers, and have a lot of fun in the process,” continued Danzinger. “CampFly is a no-pressure, low-time-commitment venue to give dancing a shot. It’s also a positive way to relieve yourself of some stress and have fun!”
For those hoping to catch the eye of their latest crush with some new moves at the next Villard Room party, CampFly is a must.
