Sports EditorBy a unanimous vote on Sunday Feb. 24, the Vassar Student Association (VSA) froze Vassar ski team activites. In response to what co-captain Scott Pascal ’10 called “an accounting error,” VSA essentially rendered the team ineffective. The action by VSA was precipitated by an event that occurred on a recent ski trip to Pico Mountain in Vermont on the weekend of Jan 15-16.
“We were up in Vermont for our last race and a bed was broken,” said Pascal. “The motel contacted Purchasing and told them it was a $100 charge.” VSA then told the team to make the individual responsible for the damage pay to replace the bed.
The team decided to split the cost between the skiers that attended the race. They were later informed that VSA had frozen their budget, restricting the team’s ability to use funds and organize events. The team was told that once the fine was paid, VSA would speak with the ski team about unfreezing their organization.
Despite the obvious difficulties that this sanction presents to the team, Pascal is confident that the issue will be resolved and this event will not affect next year’s season.
