Guest WriterOn Saturday, Feb. 16, Vassar students unleashed their sinful, sexy selves in Jewett House’s hallways to celebrate the annual Seven Deadly Sins party.
While the party’s theme was originally conceived to utilize the newly renovated tower floors of Jewett, it has since turned into one of the most anticipated and lavish all-campus events of the year.
Over time, the party has progressively become “more and more over the top,” said Jewett House President Alexandria Dempsey ’09.
Following hard on the jam-packed 100 Nights celebration featuring DJ Girl Talk, Seven Deadly Sins rounded out an intense party weekend.
The Jewett House Team collaborated with the four class years, Lathrop House, C.H.O.I.C.E. and Squirm magazine to create seven floors of sin-filled fun, with each floor taking on a different deadly sin.
“Party attendees could walk through the building and explore the sins, as well as enjoy a dance party on the first floor,” said Dempsey. While the tower floors closed at 12 a.m., party-goers continued dancing on the ground level until 2 a.m. which was DJed by Sara Slaughter ’08 and Asher Levinthal ’08.
“We wanted people to feel like Jewett is no longer Jewett,” said Dempsey. Some of the party’s highlights included C.H.O.I.C.E. and Squirm’s lustful floor of porn, the Jewett House Team’s gluttonous floor of food, and a mini American-Gladiator ring for wrath.
“I’m spending all of my time on the gluttony floor; it’s going to be off the Richter,” said Sarah Warner ’11 in anticipation of the event.
The aim of the tower floors was to pump people up before they hit the main dance party.
“It’s been getting a little difficult to find your friends at the dances recently,” said Freshman Class President Joseph Redwood Martinez. “Our floor provided people with a little social pre-party before they headed downstairs and got lost in the crowd,” he said.
Envy, the floor sponsored by the Class of 2011, was decked completely in green and was the only floor aside from the ground level to feature a DJ (DJ Olmec).
While there was no specific attire required, students were encouraged to come dressed as one of the sins.
“People did not have to dress up like a sin, although we encouraged it,” Dempsey said.
The Jewett house team and sponsoring organizations spent the majority of their Saturday afternoon preparing for the sinful celebration and decking-out each of Jewett’s nine floors.
“I set up the fourth floor which was open an extra hour because of how fun it was. There were a lot of people there and I thought that the decorations were great,” said Josselyn House Freshman representative Sarah Leon.
However, other students felt that the decorations were a bit excessive.
“I do not feel that the party planners were environmentally conscious. I would have liked to see more recyclable materials used as decorations,” said Andrew Davidson ’11.
But in spite of pro-green concerns, DJ Olmec feels the party lived up to its expectations.
“[Seven Deadly Sins] was bangin’ pretty much sums it up. It was off the chain,” he said.
Whether or not people chose to come clothed as their favorite sin, the party played host to an entire evening of entertainment.
