This past weekend, the men’s tennis team began their spring season with two definitive wins over Manhattanville College and Stevens Institute of Technology, victories that portend good things to come.

“We’re definitely moving in the right direction to the championships,” said Vassar men’s tennis player Jeremy Rosen ’09. And he’s not kidding.

The Saturday, Feb. 16 match was an easy 9-0 win for the Brewers. Motivated by winning the three doubles matches, the team went on to sweep the singles matches, losing only 12 total games.

Stevens served up some harder matches on Sunday with two of the three doubles matches, finishing with close 8-6 scores. Despite that, Vassar pulled off another 9-0 sweep, dropping only one set.

The two matches of this weekend have definitely served as a source of motivation for the men’s tennis team, especially for a team that has been consistently improving. Last year, with a 12-5 record, the team made history by becoming the first men’s sport team to win a Liberty League title. That was a drastic improvement over the 2005-2006 season, when the team finished with a 7-11 record.

This year, the team’s goals are set even higher. Captain and the fourth singles player Ashish Patil ’08 recognizes that the team is definitely improving.

“As the only senior on the team, I have seen this team come so far, and I would really like to win Liberty Leagues again and go to the [National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)] tournament,” he said.

Patil is not the only team member with sights set on the NCAA tournament. Number one singles player Mike Mattelson ’10 is confident about his team’s ability and said that “We can beat a lot of good teams and move onto nationals.”

Right now, all of the Brewers’ energy and momentum is directed toward their match against Skidmore College on March 1. Though the two teams haven’t yet played in a dual match, Vassar beat Skidmore in the finals of the 2007 Liberty League Tournament and Vassar holds a losing 1-5 record against Skidmore. Despite history, the team is ready to meet their rival. “This will be the toughest match all year…but I have a lot of confidence in our ability to pull through,” said third singles player Greg Katz ’11.
