Senior EditorWhen watching a Vassar women’s basketball game, you are certain to notice Emily Haeuser ’10. A post player and often the tallest on court, Haeuser is averaging 11.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. She is currently team leader in both, as well as co-captain and last season she was named Rookie of the Week twice by the Liberty League.
“When [Haeuser] is in the game, we’re a better team,” said Head Coach Angel Mason. “She is big for us in points, rebounds, and her height is a distraction that opens up options for other players.”
With a current record of 2-3, the Brewers have had an up-and-down season. Last Saturday, Nov. 30, the team won over visiting Hunter College, during which Haeuser had 14 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high eight blocks.
Haeuser began playing basketball in fourth grade and hasn’t stopped playing since. “I just liked it more and more and couldn’t see myself not playing,” she said.
Mason feels that Haeuser has really helped with the team’s growth and development by taking on a leadership role this season. “Her role [as captain] has been to lead by example and to be vocal on court,” said Mason. “She takes a lot of personal pride in the game…and sets a good tone for the team.”
The team will play at Western Connecticut State University tonight and at home against Keystone College on Dec. 8. After that game, the team will not play again until January, when they will begin league play.
Mason is optimistic about the team’s future and believes that Haeuser has the ability to increase their success. “I have no doubt that in another year she can be an all-conference player,” said Mason. “As long as she continues to get better and stay consistent.”
