News EditorThis August, 682 members of the Class of 2011 joined the Vassar community. They are drawn from the largest applicant pool in the College’s history, with an increase of more than 300 applications since last year. Sixty-nine percent of the class of 2011 with a high school rank graduated in the top 10 percent of their class, and nearly 95 percent were in the top 20 percent. Sixty percent of students in 2011 are female, and forty percent are male.
The incoming freshman hail from 46 states, Washington, D.C., the US Virgin Islands. The top feeder states for the Class of 2011, in order are: New York, California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Connecticut. International students come from 32 foreign countries including Ghana, Bangladesh, Botswana, Venezuela, Pakistan, India, and Zimbabwe.
Significantly, the College’s percentage of students of color has seen a marked increase in the past year, and more generally in the past five years. While the Class of 2007 was comprised of 21.7% self-reported students of color, the Class of 2011 has a record-setting 29%.
