Letters to the Editor | VSA adds Vice President for Student Life

print this articleemail this articleskip to comments

The Vassar Student Association (VSA) Council is currently considering an amendment to the VSA Constitution that would add a sixth member to the VSA Executive Board: a Vice President for Student Life. The Vice President for Student Life would work to improve the quality of student life on campus, serving as the primary liaison between students and the Dean of the College Division (which oversees Residential Life, Food Services and Security, among other offices). These responsibilities currently fall to the VSA President and while the President should remain actively engaged in these issues, his or her main focus should be overseeing and coordinating the Executive Board and VSA system.

Over the past year, the VSA leadership has worked aggressively to broaden the scope and breadth of our involvement. We have taken on more issues and gotten members of Council more engaged and invested in issues facing the College. In this process, it has become clear that the issue of student life deserves the full-time attention of an Executive Board member. There are a number of important issues on the horizon, including possible renovations of residence halls and a review of our contract with Aramark. The addition of a Vice President for Student Life will make the VSA more effective and better able to address issues that directly impact our day-to-day lives.

Council will vote on the new position at this week’s meeting (Sunday at 7 p.m. in the College Center Multi-Purpose Room). The position would then be up for election in April. I urge all students to contact their Council representatives to learn more about the proposal and to attend Sunday’s Council meeting.

—Abel McDonnell ’07, VSA President
