Sanders receives bid to cross country nationals
Having won the Eastern College Athletic Championships last weekend, Colin Sanders ’08 continued his success at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 11 in Geneseo, NY. Completing the 8K in 25 minutes and 48 seconds, Sanders placed eighth out of 230 runners, helping the team take 13th out of 30 teams. His placing also qualified him for the NCAA Division III National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18 at Wilmington College in Ohio.

“I actually ran better at Regionals than I thought I would,” said Sanders. “It was definitely my goal to qualify for nationals, and I couldn’t be happier about the weekend. While I was able to reach my biggest goal of qualifying, I’m now starting to reassess and set goals for the weekend. However the race goes, though, I couldn’t think of a better way to end the season.” —Elizabeth Pacheco, Sports Editor

Men’s and Women’s rugby fall in NRU semi-final games
After impressive wins in their quater-final games on Saturday, Nov. 4, both the men’s and women’s rugby teams fell in the semi-finals of the Northeast Rugby Union (NRU) Championships this past weekend in Bativa, NY.

On Saturday, Nov. 11, the men’s team was defeated by last year’s Division II National champions, the Coast Guard Academy 30-7, and for the third time this season, the women lost to Army. The score was 19-0.

To advance in the tournament, the teams needed to win their games on Sunday afternoon. But suffering from several injuries during the game, the men’s team lost to the University of Maine 29-10, and did not advance.

Although the women won against Cornell University 30-7, the NRU point system prevented the team from advancing, giving Brown University the bid instead. —E.P.

Liberty League honors women’s tennis team
Having finished their season as Liberty League and New York state champions, the women’s tennis team couldn’t have asked for a better finish to their already successful year. On Monday, Nov. 13, the season became even sweeter when the Brewers were awarded with various honors from the Liberty League (athletics.vassar.edu).

At the first singles position with a record of 13-2, co-captain Debbie Sharnak ’07 was named player of the year. Also, Sharnak’s teammate Nicole Pontee ’10 was chosen as rookie of the year for her distinctive success both as a third singles and third doubles player.

Like Sharnak, Pontee went undefeated in the Liberty League and had an overall record of 13-1 for singles and 11-0 for doubles.

Head Coach Kathy Campbell and assistants Bob Witty and Mark Chance were also recognized as the coaching staff of the year. —E.P.
