Sports Editor“My goal for the teams this season is the same every year: to win every single game we possibly can,” said Tony Brown, head coach of the men and women’s rugby teams for the past 12 years. The men and women came closer to reaching this goal on Saturday, Nov. 4, when both teams won their Northeast Rugby Union quarter-final games. The women defeated Yale University 37-24, and the men won 71-31 against SUNY Geneseo.
Unlike past years, the men began their season with particularly strong performances. Having lost only three seniors, the team has a tight dynamic, which has lead them to a 10-0 season. While the women have also been successful with a 7-3 record, they have more noticeably suffered from injuries and a lack of returning players.
With more than 40 athletes on each team, Brown has enlisted the help of Mark Griffiths this season. “We owe all our success to our coaches [Brown] and [Griffiths]. Without their knowledge and passion we wouldn't be where we are today,” said Tom Weishaupt ’07, co-captain for the men’s team.
Both teams will play again this weekend in Bativa, NY. The women will face Army and the men will compete against Coast Guard Academy, who were last year’s USA Rugby Division II National Champions.
