PHOCUS on photographers in new student exhibition

PHOCUS, Vassar’s student photography club, is currently sponsoring an exhibit featuring works by its members, curated by students Elizabeth Lewis ’07 and Faith Holland ’07. Fifty-seven photographs taken by 17 different student photographers are currently displayed in the Faculty Commons.

The works, which include both black and white and color compositions, range from joyous and light to sinister and melancholic. Geometric forms in black and white, such as those by Natasha Jamal ’10, contrast with sensitive portraits like Lewis’s “Untitled” works. “Untitled” features a series of scenes from a nursing home that evoke feelings of isolation and finality. Another portrait, “Dressed to the Greens” by Sylvie Rosokoff ’07, is reminiscent of a fashion photo shoot, recalling 1960s luxe.

To add to the variety, several landscapes are also on display, including “Saharan Sunset Silhouette” by Pete Whinn ’08, a vivid image of camel riders against an orange sky.

“PHOCUS is an outlet for student photographers through gallery shows, workshops, and speakers,” said Lewis. “[We] did not place any restrictions on what photographs students could submit. The shows are open to anyone and any type of photograph. I’m thrilled with the result and I received some very positive feedback at our opening.”

Since reviving the club during their sophomore year, Holland and Lewis have worked to generate interest and to gain visibility among students on campus.

“This year, we’re working on a magazine of student photography titled Fix, and we have already received some submissions,” said Lewis.

Most works in the exhibit are for sale, ranging from $7-50 for a photograph. The show will be on display until Nov. 22.
