This Week at Vassar in 1980

From Sept. 26-Sept. 27, 1980, five Vassar women eschewed typical weekend activities to break two world records. At 5:50 p.m. on Sept. 26, the students, Janet Grenda, Margaret Decker, Shelby Bryant, Wally Mack and Pat Quiana met at Vassar’s Prentiss Field to begin a relay race that would last 24 consecutive hours. The girls were aiming to break the record for the most miles run by five women in 24 hours, as well as the record for most miles run by eight women in 24 hours. The records were set at 148 miles and 162 miles, respectively.

The women took turns running one mile each, rotating for 24 straight hours. By the time the whistle blew to signal the end of the marathon relay race, the team had logged a record-breaking 186 miles. Celebration followed the awe-inspiring feat, complete with photographs and bottles of champagne.
