On Sept. 16, 1977, The Miscellany News reported that the Vassar Student Association (VSA) had declared a major budget deficit because of alleged levels of fiscal irresponsibility within the VSA.
The charges were leveled by the Student Government Association (SGA) (as the VSA was then called) Treasurer Sam Goldberg and President Steve Nelson, following a recent passage of their annual budget. The total deficit as reported in The Miscellany News was $3,488.65.
According to records, compiled by Goldberg, 22 SGA-funded organizations over-spent their annual 1976-1977 budget. The Vassar SGA budget contained no rule to eliminate the deficit. Thus, the student government was set to operate in the red, putting a damper on money available for student activities. Nelson made no comment regarding the alleged fiscal wrongdoing. Goldberg said that another reason for the deficit was the “lack of increase in the student activities fee,” from which the SGA then derived its money.
