This Week at Vassar in 1985

In the first week of the 1985-1986 academic year, an eight-month investigation conducted by Poughkeepsie Town Police ended with the arrests of three Vassar students charged with selling cocaine.

The drug busts prompted the students to withdraw from the College. According to the 1986 issue of the Miscellany News, the police also used the students as informants, and were able to nab their supplier’s connections in New York City.

Vassar’s first major drug bust in years sent shockwaves across campus. Many students were appalled that the Administration had encouraged Poughkeepsie Police’s presence on campus. Police had reportedly been monitoring the Library, Matthew’s Mug, and College Center bathrooms for drug use. Vice-President for College Administrative Services Natalie Marshall addressed student criticism, saying, “We have absolutely no control over law enforcement…and I’m not going to protect anyone who’s dealing.”
