The women’s volleyball team captured the Vassar Invitational title on Sept. 9. En route to their final win over Skidmore, the team defeated Union College, Hunter College, and, for the first time in tournament history, SUNY Cortland. While the entire Vassar team performed well, captain Amanda Hsuing ’08 had a particularly standout performance.

Although Hsuing turned her ankle during the tournament’s first match, the injury did not affect her performance and she finished the opening two matches with 43 digs. Her strong play continued, and in the final win over Skidmore, Hsuing had an impressive 46 assists and three service aces. At the tournament’s conclusion, she was named a member of the All-Tournament Team along with teammate Alia Al-Khatib ’08.

Unfortunately, this season started off chaotically for the Brewers. Paul Yee was asked to step in as the interim coach in place of Coach Jonathan Penn, who is currently on sabbatical. As captain of the team, Hsuing was responsible for helping to make this unexpected transition smooth.

One change Yee brought to the team was a new style of play. Taking these changes in stride, Hsuing has proved to be a key player and a remarkable leader. “She is continuing to grow as a captain and leader for our group of women and will be a large factor in our success for the season,” said Yee.

Defeating Cortland was a huge win for the team. Usually nationally ranked in the top 25, Cortland has an intimidating and impressive program. Key contributions to the win include Vassar’s winning the first game as well as the first nine points in the fifth and final game.

“Winning against Cortland proved we have depth and ability to not get flustered,” said Hsuing. “Going on to win the entire tournament was also great boost to our confidence and we realized that we are actually really good.”
Currently with a 10-0 record, Hsuing is excited to improve with squad and hopes the confidence gained in these initial wins will transfer to a successful season.
