Closing out WVKR Night on laptops

Most people don’t attract crowds as they sit at their computer. But Y.A.C.H.T., the musical name of Jona Bechtolt, is not most people. The Portland, Oregon-based act’s frenetic blend of electronica, grunge, and noise is much more exciting than your average student hammering away at the library—you’ll likely dance or develop schizophrenia instead.

Fellow solo-laptop performer E*rock must possess some kind of time machine, or at least a time-slowing-down machine, because there is no other way to explain his absurd productivity.

In addition to performing live music and running the record labels Audio Dregs and Fryk Beat, E*rock designs multiple animation projects with the collective Wyld File, including a series of Beck music videos. In any case, his performance on Monday, April 17 promises phat beats and animations galore. I know, because he told me so in cyberspace last weekend.

Headliner Bobby Birdman, an L.A.-based crooner, writes the songs your grandmother listens to, but replaces bar room piano with disembodied synths and laptop beats. Besides, no one does a group sing-along like Bobby.

At this final WVKR Mug Night of the year, I’d expect you to freak out, dance, get low and close, and feel only a little bit of guilt for doing it all on a Monday evening.

Existentialist play twists García Lorca

Ever wonder what happened to Federico García Lorca after a bunch of Spanish fascists killed him? Of course you do. And that’s why Nilo Cruz wrote Lorca in a Green Dress, an existentialist-type play about the playwright’s bouts with peace, love, understanding, etc.—in purgatory. According to Silicon Valley-based Artsopolis, you won’t want to miss this “poetic but ruthlessly honest” look at five sides of Lorca, one of whom, I bet, wears a green dress. Performances will be held on April 14 and April 15 at 8 p.m. in the Shiva Theater.
