The Vassar Student Association (VSA) Council voted unanimously in favor of the revised VSA Constitution on Sunday, April 9, sending it to a referendum during Spring VSA elections April 17 and 18. The updated Constitution provides step-by-step definitions of the structure and responsibilities of the VSA. There will be a yes/no vote by the student body to decide whether the new Constitution will replace the current one.

Two of the many changes under the new Constitution include the renaming of the VSA Treasurer and VSA Secretary. The elected VSA Treasurer will become the Financial Executive at the start of Vassar’s next fiscal year, on July 1. The VSA Secretary will become the VSA Organization Executive at Spring Convocation.

Currently, the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) is writing and fine-tuning the by-laws of the new Constitution. These include significant changes to organization certification by the VSA and procedural revisions.

According to CRC Chair and VSA Vice-President Kelsey Woods ’06, the new by-laws will become binding “once they are approved by Council and will not go up before the student body for ratification.” The VSA will notify students of any large changes, and the revisions are expected to be presented to Council soon after the new Constitution, if ratified, goes into effect.

If students accept the proposed Constitution, it will need to be approved by the faculty during a meeting April 19. If passed, College President Fran Fergusson will need to approve it before it takes effect at Spring Convocation.
