Guest WriterOn Sunday, April 23, the Vassar Student Association (VSA) unanimously passed a resolution supporting Counseling and Assistance in Response to Rape and Exploitive Sexual Activity (CARES) and Sexual Abuse and Violence Prevention (SAVP).
The resolution endorsed the events of the April 24-27 Sexual Assault Awareness Week. In particular, it promoted the white ribbon campaign, which asks men to pledge never to condone sexual violence against women. Some Council members had reservations about the resolution’s focus on one gender. CARES Counselor Jean McCalmont ’07 explained that it was part of a national campaign directed solely at men, since men are typically less involved than women in sexual assault awareness work.
VSA President Rick Rodems ’06 supported the resolution, because “the VSA Council speaks on behalf of the student body, and there is power in that.”
CARES consultant Federico Delgado ’06 and CARES intern Lauren Herlihy ’06 represented CARES at Sunday’s VSA meeting. “Nobody who looks into sexual violence can deny how powerful it is,” said Delgado. “The issue is to get everyone as informed as possible.”
