Sports EditorThe Vassar men’s lacrosse team (left) battled Oberlin College on Sunday, April 2 in one of the most exciting matches this season. At the onset of the fourth quarter, the Brewers were losing to the Yeomen 5-3. With 12 minutes remaining, Stephen Cataldo ’07 scored. Michael Littlefield ’07 then scored to tie the game at five and send the game into overtime.
After one scoreless but active overtime and with only minutes left in a second overtime, Oberlin ended the game by scoring a final goal.
On April 4, the Brewers lost another overtime heartbreaker to Castleton State College, 9-8, putting their record at 1-7. Though these losses have been tough on the team, their effort shows the team’s promise for the remainder of the season.
Women’s tennis hosts Seven Sisters
The Seven Sisters Tournament came to Vassar on April 1 and April 2, as the Brewers battled women’s tennis rival Wellesley for the championship title.
First singles player Debbie Sharnak ’07 (below at right) battled Wellesley’s Jenna Mezin ’08 in the final championship match-up.

Lacrosse strong in second half
After going down 9-3 in the first quarter of their match against Hamilton College on Saturday April 1, the women’s lacrosse team (below at left) fought back. In the final quarter of the game, the Brewers had cut the lead to 11-9. Unfortunately Hamilton successfully fended off the late attack—winning 14-9.
The next day however, April 2, the team took out their disappointment on Mt. St. Vincent College, winning 18-9 and boosting their record to 5-4.
Baseball starts Liberty League play
After starting their season with an 0-9 record, baseball (bottom) has begun to come together. The team has gone 3-2 in its past five games, including a victory over nationally ranked Stevens Tech. On March 31, the Brewers met the Skidmore Thoroughbreds in their home opener. After suffering a 14-4 beating in the first game of the double-header, the team rebounded to win the second match-up 4-3.
The second contest proved exciting to watch, as the Vassar defense rallied behind the steady pitching of Bobby Muller ’06. In the bottom of the ninth inning, with two Skidmore runners on, a deep fly ball caught by Mike Murn ’08 left Vassar with the win, and thankful, for once, that the Prentiss diamond does not feature a fence.
At Skidmore on April 2, the baseball team again split a double-header 1-1, losing the opening contest 3-2 and winning the second 5-4.
