Back in the 1960s, long before 2 Live Crew and others supposedly birthed modern hip-hop, a Georgia boy living in Miami named Clarence Reid assumed the alter ego of Blowfly and, depending on who you ask, became the music world’s first rapper. He made hits like “Porno Freak” (the first rap song ever banned in the U.S.), “Shittin’ on the Dock of the Bay,” and “The Sperm Is Gone” as if Adam Sandler and Weird Al Yankovic had been incorporated into the “soul talking” Southern radio DJs of the 1950s, whom Reid credits as the actual pioneers of rap.
The sober and surprisingly Christian Reid, when not performing as the ribald Blowfly, has released more than a dozen “clean” albums and penned songs for, among others, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Gwen McRae, and Betty Wright. Overall, the split personality of Reid and Blowfly has released more than 40 albums.
Blowfly is filthy, reckless hip-hop that will make you laugh, and surely dance. WVKR and Hip-Hop 101 are hosting Blowfly, along with the bands Dynasty Handbag and Despot, at the Mug on Monday, April 3. If you haven’t heard of “The Original Dirty Rapper,” don’t let it deter you from going. He might call you something I can’t print here, and if he does, celebrate. That’s Blowfly’s version of a blessing.
