Guest WriterThe Vassar Student Association (VSA) Council resolved on Sunday, March 26 to postpone their vote on the Constitutional Review Committee’s (CRC) revisions to the VSA Constitution. The vote, originally scheduled for April 2, will now take place on April 9, allowing time for additional fine-tuning before the changes become final.
“We needed an extra week to discuss the proposed changes to the Constitution and [to] allow for student input,” said VSA Vice President and CRC Chair Kelsey Woods ’06.
The CRC is revising what many consider an unclear and outdated governing document for the VSA. The proposed Constitution rectifies unnecessary legal terminology, inaccurate job descriptions, and ambiguous phrasing.
According to CRC member Sam Charner ’08, this week the CRC recommended replacing the current approval process for new organizations with a binary system.
Rather than using the two-step process of recognition and authorization, the VSA would maintain only one group of “certified” organizations.
The CRC also moved all procedural clauses from the Constitution into the by-laws.
“The Constitution lays out the organization of the VSA, whereas the by-laws contain the procedural guidelines by which the VSA should function,” said Woods.
A Constitutional Open House will be held on April 5 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the VSA office to address student questions or concerns regarding the proposed Constitution.
