Guest WriterYou’re back! Or if you fell asleep on your stomach on the beach—damn, your back! Whatever the case, Welcome to Spring 2006! Before we get to the future, a few items from the past:
Volleyball—Team Chili Wednesdays bounced back to defeat the Gimps to reach the Competitive League finals. Chili thus won the opportunity to face Team Gay Sex, who got through the regular season undefeated. In the real world, they say “Beware the Ides of March,” in IM’s we say, “Beware of Gay Sex”—Shakespeare be damned.
But the Wednesdays dethroned Gay Sex, 25-18. Congrats to Greg “Golden” Maier ’09, Catherine “The Spike Machine” Foley ’08, Noah “By Twos” Fowler ’09, “Jump’n” Jillian Shaw ’09, Mailynh “The Masher” Phan ’09, Stephanie “With Glee” Yee ’08 and Gil “The Thrill” Wasserman ’09.
The Recreational League Title was up for grabs—and the grabbiest squad was likely to end up being Tennis, Team Balls or We Don’t Have a Green Card, all of whom had four wins against one loss. Las Vegas odds have listed the latter as the favorite, mostly due to Samir “Cassius of IM’s” Halilovic ’06. Vegas was right, for once, as Halilovic and We Don’t Have a Green Card defeated Tennis 25-21 and 25-21. Kudos to James “Over the Wall” Anderson ’08, Colin “Sneaky” Sanders ’08, Zach “Watch The Back” Lampron ’08, Katherine “Borderline” DeMallie ’08, Eric “The Escaper” Langhans ’08, Leah “Wary” Weissburg ’08,
Mike “I Got The” Cashman ’06 and Ian “Under the Wire” Patrick ’07.
VC has all the madness of March, and it came in the form of 3v3 basketball. Let’s Go to Chan’s and Trey Land crept closer to a “One Shining Moment” montage. The gang at Chan’s knocked off Team Old School in Final Four action. Trey Land got past a gritty Range Out of the Gym team, 11-9 in the final game.
The Heartbreakers were just that to WKYA, as they pulled an upset to eliminate the previously unbeaten top seed in the Rec semi-finals. The winners will face Two Guys, A Girl and A Pizza Place, who usurped I Called My Girlfriend The Wrong Name.
So who was wearing IM shirts on the beach? In a marathon Final, The Heartbreakers emerged with a two-to-one win. Congrats to Garrett “I Am” King ’08, Jason “Muppet” Duffett ’09, Sara “Cool J-ing” Cornish ’09, Kyle “Half” Nelson ’09, Alison “Alley-Oop” Walsh ’09, Alexandre “Swish” Gapihan ’08, and Aaron “Bank It From Afar” Naar ’08.
On the Comp court, Trey Land edged out Let’s Go to Chans. Keith “MVP” Croxton ’06 lit up the scoreboard in the decisive game, with ample support coming from teammates Pete “Magic” Malinowski ’06, and “Fancy” Clancy Philbrick ’08.
And what would March be without wearing green and celebrating St. Patrick’s Day? We don’t have much in green attire, but we had a plethora of green with indoor soccer, from floor to soccer ball. Team Bolognious secured Comp’s number one seed heading into the play-offs.
The Bologna Boys had won a myriad of close games, led by Tristan “Green Jello” Jemiolo ’08. Advice for next St. Patrick’s Day: if you end up in an Irish pub and trouble starts brewing, look out for John “Iron” Scott ’08. IM’s indestructible object not only knocked out one of the Rookies, he also disabled one of his Replacement teammates. The Replacements won 1-0, but the players who walked off the court were the lucky ones.
Rufio and the Lost Boys became the new Rec champs. Victors include Alyson “A-Train” Piastra ’06, Simon “Says” Kawitzky ’06, “Be Like” Mike Zubrow ’07, Aaron Green ’06 “With Envy”, Alexandre “The Great” Anderson ’08, John “The Don” Palmer ’07 and Justin “Case” Jacobs ’06. As for Comp, Team Bolognious rallied for a 3-2 win at the expense of The Replacements.
