Sports EditorWhere were you at 4 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25? If you are a member of the Vassar College Track Club, you were running laps around Main building in the bitter cold.
On Friday, Feb. 24, at 4 p.m., the Track Club began their eighth annual 24-Hour Fundraising Run. The team members ran laps through the night around Main Building. Each runner typically ran a mile at a time, or three laps around the building.
Because of the high number of club members this season, the team was able to split into two groups, and one runner from each group ran at a time.
One team ran 612 laps, or 204 miles, and the other ran 668 laps, or 222.7 miles. The team’s total was 1280 laps or 426.7 miles.
When they were not running, the members spent their time in a makeshift tent outside Main Circle. The tent was stocked with supplies, music, and most importantly, blankets.
“It is quite an experience to be awake and run hard for that long, and the challenge is not easily conveyed,” said Coach James McCowan ’98.
McCowan said the money raised by the run will go to pay for meet entry fees, equipment and transportation costs. Although the pledges have not all been collected, he said he feels the run has been a success.
