¡Che! Revolution and Commerce

It’s a photograph which has been reproduced countless times on T-shirts, posters, and other tourist souvenirs. Alberto Korda’s 1960 snapshot of Che Guevara has been the singular representation of the rebellion of youth since it was captured by the Cuban photographer.

The photograph, titled “Guerrillero Heroico,” is now the subject of an exhibition at the International Center of Photography Gallery. Besides the original photo, the show features contact sheets and original magazines.

The presentation examines the photograph’s importance throughout recent history, as well as why the image became a symbol of revolution.

The International Center of Photography is located at 1133 Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan. The exhibit closes on Feb. 26.

Conceptual German artist to lecture

The artist who turned Picasso’s Man with a Hat into a cigarette advertisement to mock Phillip Morris’ sponsorship of a Cubist retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 1989 will lecture at Vassar on Wednesday, March 1.

Ever-political Hans Haacke has made his mark by criticizing the likes of a state-owned British automobile company that supplied vehicles to South African police and military during apartheid, the questionable real estate tactics of New York from 1951 to 1971, and Margaret Thatcher. The last work—Shapolsky et al. Manhattan Real Estate Holdings, A Real Time Social System, as of May 1, 1971—implicated too many trustees at the Guggenheim Musuem, which propelled them to cancel Haacke’s one-artist show six weeks before it was to open in 1971. The Claflin Lecture will be held in Taylor 203 at 6 p.m.
