Emma Epstein Assistant Life Editor

Exactly 20 years ago on Feb. 10, the Board of Trustees and Search Committee announced that Frances D. Fergusson would become the ninth president of Vassar College. She was the youngest person to hold the office of College President. A press conference was held in the student lounge of the Mudd Chemistry Building where the incoming president voiced her opinions and goals for the coming years. She expressed her rejection of the possibility of creating a Vassar football team, emphasized the importance of need-based financial aid, and envisioned a day when Vassar would claim a gender ratio of 50/50. Some students worried about the differing enviornments of Vassar and Bucknell University, where Fergusson had most recently been employed. However, most had high hopes for Fergusson’s ability to create a closer community between faculty, administration, and students.
