After approximately one hour of debate on Feb. 17, 1985, the Vassar Student Association decided to allocate The Miscellany News an addiional $5,000 in order to continue printing for the remainder of the semester. Without this funding, the paper would have shut down. Many people on the VSA council questioned the liability of attributing much-needed funds to an organization that had been so mismanaged in the past. Editor in Chief Nick Katz explained that the acquisition of such a large deficit had occured because “everyone who signed the checks in the past was a senior.” Katz claimed that seniors in the past did not care about overspending. To prevent a repeat of this debacle, The Miscellany News’ editorial board passed new by-laws, which required that either the Editor in Chief or the treasurer to be a junior.
