Doug Dalessandro ’07 has resigned as President of Lathrop House for unspecified reasons. Vassar Student Association (VSA) president Rick Rodems ’06 announced Dalessandro’s resignation at the Jan. 29 VSA Council meeting. VSA unanimously voted to declare the position vacant and to fill it by appointment during their Jan. 29 meeting.

Dalessandro was not reachable for comment about his resignation.

Lathrop House secretary Catherine Wright ’08 will take over as interim president in accordance with the VSA Constitution.

VSA Vice President Kelsey Woods ’06 said the VSA prefers to appoint a new president rather than hold a special election. “At this point we don’t want to leave someone with such a big position who doesn’t perhaps have house team experience," said Woods during the Council meeting. "We think that by doing it as an application process we can help...do it more efficiently."

“Similar situations have happened in the past and have been done by appointment,” added VSA Secretary Laureen Cantwell ’06. “If you want, I can cite some examples, one being the VSA treasurer himself a couple of years ago, that was done by an appointment and application process. Personally, I’m in favor of the house team coming up with an appointment for the position, knowing their needs, their ideas.”

Woods emphasized that the VSA has left much of the application process to the Lathrop House Team, suggesting that they send out an application in e-mail form with a set number of days in which to respond.

“Basically, there’s not a set format on how this has to be done and [the Lathrop House Team] get a lot of leeway in figuring out their needs,” Woods said.

She added that the Lathrop House Team will also interview, discuss, and choose the candidates. This way, they will be able to find someone who can suit their specific needs as a dorm.

All of the applications, including the chosen recommendation, will then be brought to the VSA Executive Board where they will be reviewed. The House Team’s recommendation will be given special consideration. The decision is then passed to the Council for a last review. The final decision is projected for Sunday, Feb. 12.
