Ariel Pink, the Los Angeles based lo-fi artist and pet project of the more popular Animal Collective, releases the follow-up to his Paw Tracks Records debut, House Arrest. In fact, he is the only member of Paw Tracks not to contribute to Animal Collective. However, his connections did not gain him immediate fans. He commented to the Los Angeles Times, “People boo me everywhere. They don’t even hide their contempt.”
Pink is known for his fuzzy, cassette-record sounds and heavy sampling. If The Doldrums debut was consistent in reworking songs from the Magnetic Fields’ 69 Love Songs, House Arrest is less discriminating in the sources it borrows from. The album shamelessly quotes rhythms from the Bee Gees and Elvis Costello, and delves more firmly into conventional patterns he rejected in The Doldrums. With this album, the extent of his future popularity remains unknown.
