ACDC and Retreat changes garner mixed reactions

Significant changes to the Vassar food service were made over winter break. Director of Food Service Maureen King said that the changes were in response to the surveys completed by students, requesting healthier options and a wider variety of food choices in the dining centers around campus.

The Retreat has been re-arranged, due to the fact that there is higher traffic in spring term because students have more Retreat points, using their leftover ACDC points from last term. An ordering system has been set up in the grill, with radio transmitters to inform students when their food is ready, and separate pickup and ordering booths.

“The pager system and the new setup will dramatically alleviate congestion in the Retreat,” said King.

While Rasheed Gonga ’09 said that the pager system is “cool,” he also noted that “Food [in the Retreat] still takes a long time to prepare and then lines are still long. I guess it’s a little better organized.”

The Kiosk will also be seeing some changes as the semester progresses, adding a selection of sushi and pre-made sandwiches to its normal offering of baked goods and espresso.

Changes in ACDC include a new self-service pasta bar, a variety stand at the checkout, and expansion in the food selection offered to students. Some students like the setup. Gayatri Shetty ’08 gushed about the pasta bar and the breakfast selection. “I can get pesto with my pasta and chocolate chip pancakes,” said Shetty. “It’s great!”

However, some students worry that since the variety stand at the checkout contains candy and other junk food their requests for healthier foods were not fully met.

“We are focusing on healthier foods, with whole wheat pastas and a wider variety of vegetarian options,” said King. “We are continually looking for ways to improve the eating experience at Vassar and will be continually changing what we do to meet the needs of the Vassar community.”
