Liang: A Biographical Exhibit

The late professor Hsi-Huey Liang taught modern European history at Vassar and was strongly devoted to art, as well as being a prolific artist himself. The Palmer Gallery has organized Houmptiphong: The Art and Life of Hsi-Huey Liang, an exhibition which presents a fraction of the nearly 1,000 drawings he drafted to accompany the text of his two illustrated history books.
Liang settled in Poughkeepsie in 1951 after emigrating from China. His art primarily served to illuminate his words, and was inspired by Chinese styles. The show celebrates a great professor and a great proponent of the arts. The exhibit closes on Nov. 11.

Classic Shakespeare woos the CDF

The Experimental Theater Group performs Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet this weekend. The play concerns two warring families of Verona—the Montagues and the Capulets—and the tragic love of Lord Montague’s son Romeo for Lord Capulet’s daughter Juliet. Although engaged, Juliet catches the eye of Romeo at the Capulet ball, but when Lord Capulet sets the date for Juliet’s marriage, she vows to turn the tables. Her scheme results in their deaths, but also a love so strong that it becomes more important than life itself.
Max Perry ’08 and Gwen Ellis ’08 play the two leads, and Experimental Theater instructor Eunice Roberts directs.
Romeo and Juliet will be performed at the Martel Theater in the Center for Drama and Film on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-5 at 7:30 p.m. Reserve tickets at the Info Desk.
