In November of 1988, the geology department faculty found four supposedly dangerous minerals missing from the geology museum. Two of the minerals, realgar and orpiment, caused extra concern as they were composed of 50 percent arsenic, which is fatal if ingested. Zilicon, a radioactive mineral, stibnite, and cinnabar were also taken from the museum. Geology professors advised the culprits not to touch them or throw them away, because they posed a great threat to the environment. They assured students that if returned to the department, no questions would be asked.
