Francesco Galetto ’06 is on the verge of tying the record for career assists

Sports EditorFrancesco Galetto ’06 isn’t out to set or break records, or even to try and become Athlete of the Week. In fact, goals like that are so far out of his range of sight, he was very surprised to find himself tracked down for comment.
“It’s very surprising,” he said. “I guess you just work to accomplish something, not one goal in particular.”
Accomplishments were particularly hard-fought for the men’s soccer team this year. With only one match left in the season, the Brewers are 4-8-3. But that isn’t the record that’s being mentioned next to Galetto’s name lately.
This season, he has charted seven assists, one away from the Brewer’s single-season assist record of eight. With 17 assists throughout his Vassar career, he is also one shy of the record for total assists.
All of these assists come from Galetto’s position as support striker, linking the midfield play and the offense. “Basically I hold the ball and give it to guys about to score,” he explained.
In this prime position, it might be tempting to steal some of the glory for himself. But, Galetto said, “I’m just not very good at scoring so I give it to someone to score for me instead.”
On the field, he said he looks to pass to other players, like fellow senior David Vernon or Ben Fox ’07.
“The other kids were a lot of fun,” said Galetto. “We had a good group, a great bunch of seniors.”
Even this great group, however, couldn’t pull the Brewers back up to the level of play that produced two shut-out wins in the season openers. “The ball just didn’t bounce [that] way this season,” said Galetto.
