Guest WriterEvery October, the senior class hosts an all-campus Halloween party. In recent years, students have spent a large part of the evening in and outside the entrance of Main Building, waiting to be admitted into the party.
Two years ago, the College Center exceeded capacity and the Halloween party was shut down early. In an attempt to avoid this scenario and alleviate the problem of waiting in a long line, this year’s Senior Council has changed the set-up for the October 2005 Halloween Party with an eye toward safety regulations.
"Changes always bring about good things, especially for the Halloween party,” said Class of 2006 President Michael Cashman. “We want to make sure there are enough fire watch, and to maximize space in the Villard Room.”
Vassar employees will act as fire watches, making sure that the College Center does not exceed capacity. Fire watches do not enforce drug and alcohol regulations, although Security will monitor the beer room and the entrances and turn away students who appear intoxicated.
Another change involves ticket sales and entrances. As in past years, students will be able to purchase tickets in advance and also at the door. Advance tickets will allow students to enter the College Center through the door on the Retreat patio. The second entrance will increase the likelihood of (although will not guarantee) entrance for students with advance tickets.
The Senior Council hopes to offer students the option of purchasing advance tickets on their V-Cards, which they trust will encourage students to purchase advance tickets. Additionally, the Council is working with security in an effort to allow students over the age of 21 to purchase wristbands along with their advance tickets.
Otherwise, the changes to this year’s Halloween party, themed “Your Worst Nightmare,” are minimal.
The DJ will, as in past years, be in the Villard Room, although Class of 2006 Vice President Sarah Porter assures that the placement of the DJ will “allow for maximum capacity in the Villard Room.” Four bands will play in the MPR during the evening and the Mug will be closed for the night.
When asked about the effect of the changes to the Halloween party, Cashman said, “Hopefully the two entrances will contribute not only to the safety of students but also to having fun at ‘Your Worst Nightmare.’”
The party will take place in the College Center on Saturday, Oct. 29, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
