In October 1979, about 40 Vassar students joined over 75,000 people who marched for gay rights at the monument grounds in Washington, D.C. According to an article published in The Miscellany News published Oct. 26, the march offered many LGBTQ students a chance to feel part of a national, larger group. The article specified a number of the demonstrators’ demands: “The repeal of anti-gay laws, the passage of a gay rights bill by Congress, a presidential order banning discrimination against gays in the government, the army, and federally funded projects, the end of discrimination against lesbian mothers and gay fathers in custody cases, and the protection of gay youth against laws used to oppress or harass them in their homes, schools, and jobs.”
