This past weekend the women’s swimming and diving team held their home opener, dominating challenger William Patterson, 129-79, winning all 13 events of the meet. Within this impressive team victory, one swimmer stood out. Her name is Emily Love ’09, and in the first ever meet of her Vassar swimming career she broke two school records, both during the 100-yard backstroke.

At the 50-yard mark of the backstroke it was realized that Love had bested the backstroke record by .85 second. Love completed the 100-yard race in 1:00.34, breaking teammate and Liberty League Player of the Week Blaire Fromm’s ’06 school record of 1:03.00 and coming in a full 10 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

Along with her backstroke performance, Love also gained a sound first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, coming in at 1:59.54, 13 seconds ahead of the competition and only a third of a second behind the school record. She also aided Vassar teammates Allison Koenker ’09. Jess Letner ’09 and Fromm in their decisive 400-yard relay victory.

Despite the impressive numbers and victory, Love is happiest about being a part of the Vassar team and being given the opportunity to compete.

“I have been swimming for 10 years but I have never really been part of a team, so being a part of the Vassar swim team has been amazing,” Love said. “I think I was more excited about putting on the team suit for the first time and having our team win the meet, than I was about the records.”

Love expressed great pride in her teammates and their abilities as well as gratitude toward coaches Lisl Prater-Lee and Jesup Szatkowski, whom she said have helped her to greatly improve over the past five weeks of training.

“Emily's greatest asset is her ability to focus and channel all of her energy,” said Prater-Lee. “Her enthusiasm and drive permeates the group. Love works very well with her teammates because she realizes that it is one bigger, enthusiastic group that is charging forward.”
The team and Love will look to charge forward for the entirety of the season, beginning Saturday when the team will compete at NYU.
