Athlete of the Week shows intensity

Intensity is a word that gets tossed around the Athletic Department like confetti on New Year’s Eve, but when it comes to women’s soccer captain Jenny Baumwoll ’06, intensity is really the only word to use.

The Massachusetts native is still adjusting to the position of center midfielder, which she had never played before this season. With experience in defensive and offensive play, she intensely applies her knowledge of both to stay on top of the action on all sides.

“It’s really a thinking position, but a lot of talk on the field helps,” said Baumwoll. “We also have a great team chemistry this year, so that makes it easier.”

Nothing was really easy for the women’s soccer team this year, who just ended a 0-5 losing streak with a win over RPI on Oct. 1.

“We got really pumped before the game, because RPI is always a rival for us,” said Baumwoll. “And they are a really physical team, they play really rough, so that helped up keep up the intensity.”

For coach Sarah Dwyer-Shick, Baumwoll’s solid play contributed to the team’s much-needed first Liberty League win. “Jenny plays the full 90 minutes when she’s called on, and she allows us to attack from the midfield.”

Looking ahead, Baumwoll hopes “that win will spur more intensity for the next few weekends.” In a rush of home games, the Brewers will be facing four of their six Liberty League opponents.

“We can do better than we have been,” said Baumwoll, but no matter how intense things get,

Baumwoll always stays calm said Dwyer-Shick. “She’s collected on the field. She really keeps things together.”
