Lakefest welcomes fall with beer, sticks

Summer is gone, fall will fast escape us, and warm, sunny Saturdays will soon be replaced by rainy winter afternoons watching laserdiscs in Rocky 200 and stealing even more tea from the Bean. Before those sorry days, seize the sun and head to Lakefest this Saturday, Oct. 1, at Sunset Lake.

Live bands, barbeque, tie dye, frisbee, perhaps even a rematch of last year’s stick duel between the Non-Student Organization and the Vassar Outing Club will delight, awe, and entertain. Some folks may even swim in the lake.

May the sun shine and the stage glow. Sponsored by the Outing Club and the Vassar Greens, Lakefest starts at 1 p.m. and before ending at 7 p.m. promises, in addition, canoe races, pie-eating, a bike race, local vendors and beer.

Poder Latino hosts Mug Night

If the lack of merengue, salsa and reggaeton selections at Matthew’s Mug has been nagging you lately, stop by the Mug on Saturday, Oct. 1 for Poder Latino’s first Mug night of the year. New York City based DJ Direk is scheduled to spin all night.

Poder Latino hosts a wide variety of lectures, music events, and forums throughout the academic year, and more so in the upcoming month, which is National Hispanic Heritage Month.

In addition, Poder Latino and MEChA have been active in bringing Latino music and programming to our own WVKR, as well as reaching out to the sizable Latino population in Poughkeepsie and the surrounding area.

Be sure to stop by the Mug sometime during your Saturday evening sojourns. It will be sweaty, and it will be fun.
