Wolf Colonel is playing at Wowhaus 49 this Sunday! Now, what in the name of Karl Blau does that mean, exactly? Wolf Colonel is Jason Anderson, a folksy, indie-rock troubadour on K Records, the lo-fi and punk Olympia, WA record label you might associate with the Blow, the Microphones, and Beat Happening.
Anderson is catchy, lyrically driven, sometimes acoustic, sometimes electric, and he likes his extended metaphors. Wowhaus 49 is 49 Park Ave., the off-campus residence of some very welcoming folks you may or may not know.
The doors to the Wowhaus will open at 8pm, with the small price of $3 to support Anderson and opening acts Tigersaw, the Sanguine, and Landing. Stop by for this rare off-campus event: indie folk in some friends' living room. What, no one told you Poughkeepsie was just like Portland?
A retrospective of Agnes Martin’s continues at Dia:Beacon’s Riggio Galleries. The exhibit, aptly titled Unknown Territory, focuses on Martin’s early career, when she lived in New York City and began to experiment with what became her trademark grid paintings. The works are rare, fragile, and hardly exhibited due to their rarity.
Martin attended Columbia University’s Teachers’ College and moved to Coenties Slip at the lowest reaches of Manhattan. Her neighbors included Ellsworth Kelly, Ann Wilson, and Leonore Tawney. She has been exhibited at the Whitney and Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum, and finally relocated to New Mexico.
The exhibit closes on Nov. 7, but is part of a continuing exhibition which moves chronologically through Martin’s career. The upcoming installment focuses on works from 1974 to 1979, and exhibitions will continue over the next three years.
