For all 12 months of 1986, Vassar’s sister schools had only to gaze up at a calendar to yearn after the one thing only Vassar could boast: men. Three years prior, two Vassar students had scrounged up a few thousand dollars to produce a calendar entitled “The Men of Vassar College: 1986.” Models were nominated by word of mouth to form a master list of 100 candidates. The creators sent 50 men from the original list letters announcing their candidacy for the calendar and asked them to pose for a test photo shoot. Thirty men replied, and 12 were chosen to appear in the calendar. The calendar cost $5.95 and was sold in the Cooperative Bookshop, Penny Lane novelty shop, by mail order, and in various locations in Poughkeepsie and New York City.
