VSA votes to upgrade web server
This past week, the Vassar Student Association (VSA) voted to upgrade their web server. The new server will cost just short of $8,000 and should be more reliable than the current one. Computer Information Services (CIS) will physically house the server and will be responsible for keeping it running and backing it up. The current server is housed in the VSA Office.

According to VSA Secretary Margeaux Knee ’05, “CIS won’t have any power over the VSA website and won’t change anything—they can just fix it if it breaks down.”

The VSA will still have a webmaster separate from CIS. While the new server will require maintenance, the physical hardware should last three to four years. CIS Vice President Bret Ingerman said, “This is a good partnership, and both sides are favorably inclined.”

Although the new server is expensive, Ingerman noted that, “This is the cost of entry to get a mission-critical server, and costs more money because it is more reliable.”
