Baseball players are boxed into the tennis bays at Walker Field House until Prentiss Field is in condition for outside practices.

Hoop Mountain basketball camp, an event for high school and junior college students, also took place in the tennis bays. Just beyond the curtain, IM soccer rolls out while baseball players throw pitches.

Long winter takes toll on campus sports and fields

The long Vassar winters are tough, and no one is more excited for sunshine and warm weather than the spring sports teams. Baseball, tennis, and lacrosse have been practicing indoors for weeks, pretending the green indoor tennis courts are grassy fields. “Prentiss [Baseball Field] looks wonderful,” said Jeff Horst, Associate Executive Director of Buildings and Grounds. “But it’s so soft, we hesitate to let the teams out there. They can ruin their field before the season starts.”

The rugby team began practice a few weeks ago, enduring the puddles and mud out at Vassar Farm. “We can’t repair any damage they may have done,” said Horst. “I can’t criticize the coaches for wanting to get their teams out there, but there’s nothing we can do.”

Buildings and Grounds and the teams have no more control over the weather than the rest of us. “We just need some wind and dry weather” said Horst.
