Financial Aid at Vassar | The Demographics of Aid

print this articleemail this articleskip to comments

In putting together this special feature, The Miscellany News collected numbers and statistics about the financial experience of students with the school. One of our regions of focus was on the recent experiences of the student body with Vassar financial aid in the form of scholarships. Published here are the percentages of total students receiving aid over the past ten years. The percentage has hovered above the 50 percent mark; fluxuations are attributed primarily to the fluxuations of the economy and not to changes in the admission pool or funds available.

Percentage of students receiving Vassar Scholarships, 1995-2004

2004/2005       52.5%
2003/2004       51.5%
2002/2003       53.1%
2001/2002       51.5%
2000/2001       51.0%
1999/2000       54.4%
1998/1999       54.0%
1997/1998       53.6%
1996/1997       53.6%
1995/1996       52.2%

Another way to look at trends in financial aid is to consider how the needs of one class change over their time at the school. In the case of the Class of 2005, for example, the percentage of students on Vassar scholarship is slightly smaller during this year than when they first matriculated. As freshmen, the class size was 696 with 346 receiving Vassar Scholarship, and in Fall 2005 the size was 681 with 343 receiving aid.
