Gehry-designed center hosts classics
While most of us pass by the Center for Drama and Film on a daily basis, many of us have yet to see Bard’s distinct, world-class arts complex, the Frank Gehry-designed Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. If you haven’t ventured up Route 9 to Annandale-on-Hudson to visit Gehry’s architectural masterpiece, now is the time to go.
On Friday Feb. 4 and Saturday Feb. 5, the American Symphony Orchestra presents the second installment of a special series featuring the masterworks of classical greats. This weekend the American Symphony Orchestra will perform Johannes Brahams’s Piano Concerto No.1 (1854-1858), Richard Strauss’s Don Juan (1888-1889) and Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations (1898-1899). The American Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Leon Botstein, states that it “seeks to make great music a relevant, accessible, and enjoyable experience for all kinds of listeners.” S,o if you are in the mood to hear the works of some the world’s great composers, performed by one of our country’s distinct orchestras, look no further. The concerts start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $38. Call (800)505-1267 for availability.

Rhinebeck welcomes Art to the stage
Yasmina Rezna’s Tony-Award winning play Art is being performed as a part of the Art Imitates Art series at the Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck. The series includes the productions of three plays pertaining to art (Art, Sunday in the Park with George, and Nude with Violin), which are coinciding with exhibitions of local artists’ work. The month-long series culminates this weekend with Rezna’s award-winning work.
Art is set in Paris and tells the story of three friends. Serge has spent 200,000 Francs (around $40,000) on a piece of art that is essentially a white canvas. While Marc is infuriated by Serge’s purchase, Yvan is caught somewhere between his two pals as he tries to plan his wedding. Rezna’s work, which was translated from French by Christopher Hampton, gets to the heart of the age-old question: What is art?
Art will be performed on Feb. 5 at 8 p.m. and Feb 6 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults. For more information call the Box Office at (845)876-3080.
