Film League screens Coffee and Cigarettes
James Jarmusch’s most recent cinematic endeavor, Coffee and Cigarettes, depicts two of our favorite vices as simply two peas in a pod. The film, which was shot sporadically over a 17-year period, all in black and white, captures 11 vignettes, which are centered around none other than caffeine and nicotine.
The earliest segment, which is between Roberto Benigni of Life is Beautiful and comedian Steven Wright, was done in 1987. Other notable pairings, that appear throughout the film include: Iggy Pop and Tom Waits; Jack and Meg White; Steve Coogan and Alfred Molina; and Cate Blanchette and Cate Blanchette.
Blanchette does a terrific job portraying two characters in one vignette. However, perhaps the most entertaining moment in the film belongs to Bill Murray and Wu Tang Clan’s RZA and GZA. While some vignettes have stronger and more engaging conversations, as a total package, Jarmuch has made a truly unique film that no one should miss.
Coffee and Cigarettes will be shown on Nov. 5 and 6 in Blodgett Auditorium at 7 p.m.

Carlin and Lord of the Dance at Mid-Hudson Civic Center
Poughkeepsie has not been known around the entertainment community as a profitable venue. However, recently more top-name entertainers and performances have been coming to this small town, catering to the tastes of Vassar students and community members alike. On Nov. 5 comedian George Carlin will perform and on Nov. 10 the Broadway hit Lord of the Dance will hit the stage, both at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center.
Carlin, who recently published The New York Times Best-Selling book, When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops? is famous for his political, religious, and sexual satire. He is touring the country to both promote his book and perform his latest stand-up comedy routine. Following his local performance, Carlin will continue to criss-cross the United States, as well as appear on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” Tickets are $35, Nov. 5, 7p.m.
The Lord of the Dance, which caused a revolution to include dance-centered shows on Broadway, will bring its tour to Poughkeepsie as well. Tickets are $29.50, Nov 10, 7:30p.m.
