The event, organized by the ASU, portrayed different aspects of African culture in addition to the role of being an international student at Vassar. Improvisational skits, student-written poems, traditional songs, stories, dances, and refreshments all served as a tribute to African heritage and to educate Vassar students about the ways in which culture is something to be proud of.
The event was held in the Villiard Room in Miain on Oct. 30 on from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Students got the chance to socialize before and after the event, as they sampled homemade plantains, unique kinds of sodas, and other refreshments. An eclectic variety of music was provided, exemplifying the pride of the African cultures and the fusion of different cultures within the continent. An original skit demonstrating a good-natured “dance-off” portrayed groups dancing to music ranging from traditional African songs with samba beats to tango-inspired dances.
The highlight of the event, the fashion show, was hosted by two MCs and kept the tone upbeat and friendly. Flags of the different African countries were hung on the walls, and provided a colorful escape for the weary, homework-ridden student.
