Floating Cinema screens films on Hudson

The Hudson River has been the subject of several films over the last decade. What better way to celebrate these films than to screen them on a 40-foot barge floating atop the river itself? This year, in conjunction with the city of Poughkeepsie and Marist College, Vassar will present “The Floating Cinema,” a futuristic movie screen invisioned by New York-based filmmaker and visual artist, John Rubin.

The Floating Cinema has taken many forms in the past. It has traveled around Europe with an exhibit called “CELL, initiators of incidents,” which broadcast several still pictures as it traveled along the water. The Hudson project, however, will show three silent films by Peter Hutton. These films have all been praised by The New York Times as moving and inspiring.

The event has additionally been sponsored by several enviromental and educational groups around the Hudson Valley area to encourage the maintance of the beautiful, but highly polluted, river.

The Floating Cinema will be presented on Oct. 9 at 10 p.m. at Poughkeepsie’s Waryas Park. Refreshments will be served.

Vassar Design is featured in Palmer Gallery

The latest exhibition in the James W. Palmer Gallery, “Design Inside: The Art of Communicating Life at Vassar,” will showcase the vast array of graphic designs that are created each year for various campus happenings. Unbeknownst to majority of Vassar’s community, two print and four web designers put their skills to work and masterfully create over 300 print pieces, 375 web page banners, and 25 new primary websites every year. “Design Inside” will feature a 43-foot long wall that will be covered in promotional posters, which have been used to advertise lectures, performances, art exhibitions, and various campus activities. Twelve computer monitors will also showcase some of Vassar College’s 15,000-page website. Finally, a handful of art catalogues, books, and brochures produced for the Francis Lehman Loeb Art Center, the Library’s Department of Archives and Special Collections, and previous shows in the Palmer Gallery will also be on display. “Design Inside: The Art of Communicating Life at Vassar” will close on Oct. 17. On Wed. Oct. 6, a reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Palmer Gallery.
