Philaletheis presents coming-of-age-story

Opening for the Philaletheis Society this year will be the poignant comedy Kimberly Akimbo, which won the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award in 2003. The play is one of the latest works of acclaimed playwright David Lindsay-Abaire.

Kimberly Akimbo is a coming-of-age story centered on its title character, Kimberly, a girl afflicted with the rare disease progeria, which causes her to age four and a half times faster than a healthy adolescent. Though she has only just turned sixteen, Kimberly resembles a seventy year-old woman.
Chris Gray, director of last year’s Wonder of the World, is a self-declared fan of the playwright’s work. “I like a show to be entertaining,” he said, “and this one tells a fun story.” Though Gray has only two weeks to put the show together, he has high hopes. His thesis for drama in acting will be going up in the spring, so Kimberly Akimbo is his “last hurrah” as a director.

This dysfunctional tale of an “old soul” and young love is a pleasure to watch. See it at the Shiva Theater Oct. 13 through 15 at 7 p.m.

Hudson Valley Folk Guild celebrates 25 years

For over 25 years, the Hudson Valley Folk Guild has provided local musicians with an open stage to showcase their abilities and passions. Now, over 30 members have recorded and produced professional records. This year, the Guild will honor its musicians and history with a radio-inspired extravaganza.

Built around an old-time radio show, musicians and voice personalities alike will perform the music that has influenced the history of the Guild as well as new favorites. Helen Avakian, the wife of Music Professor Arthur Chaplin, will perform alongside several others for this night of entertainment and celebration.

The performances will take place Oct. 22 and Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. at the Theatre at Cunneen-Hackett (12 Vassar Street). Tickets are $8 for students. For more information, call Kevin Becker at (845)229-0170.
