How much food does Vassar eat? Director of Campus Dining Maureen King was able to give some facts, figures, and insight about how and how much food the Vassar community eats at the ACDC and the Retreat. Are the results surprising? Maybe.

Before we get to the facts, it’s important to know that there have been some shifts in Campus Dining in recent years. Believe it or not, the College is getting healthier in its food choices. King said, “The trend has gone from vegetarian to vegan to more vegan-vegetarian requests.” She added, “There’s definitely a trend toward healthy offerings.” According to King, students have been requesting more steamed vegetables as well.

Of course, this trend doesn’t mean students and faculty have stopped eating Nilda’s cookies. To compliment these healthier habits, students are requesting more nutritional information on each of these containers. King said, “The nutritional content is a big thing.” The Food Committee, which meets once every two weeks, will help address these issues, including an effort to help get the nutritional information available online. The Food Committee consists of student and administrative representatives.

The food at Vassar comes from a number of different sources, the largest of which is Sysco, a food distributor out of Albany. Most meats and grocery items come from Sysco. Much of the food also comes from local sources: Rockland Bakery, Crowley Dairy, Ronnebrook Dairy, and the Roundout Valley Grower’s Association.

The following table is a list of orders of food purchased between Sept. 13 and Sept. 19.

The Numbers
Each week, students at ACDC consume...
3100 glasses of juice
2100 pieces of pizza
900 slices of fruit
2500 salads
3364 sodas
